ABOUT
Born in 1972, Rhys grew up in Surrey and is now living in Woking, after returning from living in South East Asia and the Middle East. Rhys is passionate about the great outdoors especially with mountainous environments and loves walking in the mountains when the weather is closing in and raining hard with thunder and lightning. His passion for the outdoors was first discovered during a school adventure holiday trip in North Wales aged 12. It was here that he had his first taste of rock climbing and reaching the top of Snowdon, his first mountain summit.
After returning home to Byfleet with no mountains or rock faces to climb, being creative was now the replacement, and so swapped mountains and rock faces for trees and football stadium flood light pylons, much to the anger of the local police.
Rhys was always keen on outdoor pursuits - and after an unpromising start at school ("I was the one standing and chosen last for football and cricket, with a united groan of 'Oh sir not Rhys' from the opposing team. Yes I was the one with two left feet and holes in hands") he did eventually run cross country for his school and at county level, then discovered climbing, parachuting and scuba diving. It was around 17 years of age he really got into reading about mountaineering, especially stories of climbing expeditions in the Himalayas by the pioneers of Himalayan climbing, such as George Mallory, Andrew Irvine, Chris Bonnington, Reinhold Messner and Doug Scott.
After serving with the British Army (TA) Parachute Regiment, his keen interest in climbing, mountaineering and high altitude climbing grew. It is this overwhelming passion for climbing, which has now seen Rhys focus his sights on reaching the summit of Mount Everest and try to get there without supplemental oxygen.
When Rhys is not climbing he is involved in planning and training for his Everest attempt and also heavily involved with organizing trekking expeditions in the Himalayas for young adults to raise money for charity and get them actively involved with planning the trips and experiencing the magic of climbing and seeing the world's greatest mountain range.
